Thousands of Pakistani lost jobs in UAE due to lockdown

According to the Pakistani Consul General in Dubai, more than 20,000 Pakistani nationals stuck in the United Arab Emirates have requested permission to fly home after facing layoff from their jobs due to lockdown.

In spite of the suspension of passenger flights out of the country due to the coronavirus pandemic around 35,000 Pakistanis have registered with the consulate in Dubai in a request to return to Pakistan.

Pakistan is a big labour supplier to the UAE, with more than a million Pakistanis living and working in the country. As coronavirus is impacting is also impacting the world economy and unemployment is increasing with an enormous rate. Dubai has influenced also and in return, many foreigner working labours laid off from their jobs.

According to the report of Dubai’s Gulf News newspaper, hundreds of Pakistanis gathered outside the consulate on Sunday for the registration. The consulate spokesman debated the figure and police had dispersed the group as they were violating the lockdown.

As both the countries has suspended the passenger flights but Dubai authorities have stated that they are ready to operate flights to repatriate stranded Pakistanis and waiting for permission in this regard.
